Use Google to add friends as contact for account recovery

Google is rolling out several new account-recovery and messaging protections: under the Security tab You can add up to 10 Recovery Contacts—trusted friends or family who must approve being added and can be chosen to help if you’re locked out; when used, the contact receives a temporary verification code valid for 15 minutes to confirm your identity, and a contact cannot be reused for seven days after being selected.

The company is also introducing sign-in with a mobile number as a recovery option: the tool automatically finds accounts linked to a phone number and lets you verify your identity using the lock-screen passcode or pattern from your previous device (this feature is rolling out gradually worldwide).

On the messaging side, Google expanded on-device spam and scam protection (first available on Pixel) and is adding spam-link detection in Google Messages for all users so the app will warn you and block visits to suspicious URLs. For stronger chat authentication, Google Messages now includes a key verifier that confirms the other party’s identity—users on Android 10 and later can scan a QR code for a contact to verify them and help ensure end-to-end encryption and message privacy.
